Summer Student Position – Museum Assistant & Community Heritage Coordinator

Employment Period: June 20 – August 14, 2026 (8 weeks, exact dates may be flexible based on student availability)

Hours: 35 hours per week

Wage: $18.00 per hour

Position Type: Full-time, grant-funded summer position (Canada Summer Jobs – 280 hours total)

Important Note: Housing is not provided. Candidates must live in or near Winnipeg Beach or be able to reliably travel to the community for work each day.

The Winnipeg Beach Historical Society is seeking an enthusiastic and responsible student to join our small team for the 2026 summer season. This grant-funded position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in museum operations, local history research, public programming, digital communications, and community engagement in the beautiful Interlake resort community of Winnipeg Beach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Open and close the Winnipeg Beach Museum daily, ensuring a welcoming and safe environment for visitors

  • Greet visitors, provide information about Winnipeg Beach history, and promote/lead our popular Historic Walking Tour

  • Operate the museum gift shop (process sales, restock merchandise, and track inventory)

  • Assist with the care, handling, and basic conservation of artifacts and archival materials

  • Design and install new interpretive displays within the museum

  • Conduct historical research on Winnipeg Beach and the surrounding area

  • Update and maintain the Historical Society’s website and social media channels

  • Create a new educational program or activity kit for local children and summer visitors

  • Collaborate on the design and construction of the Society’s entry in the Winnipeg Beach summer parade float

  • Perform other duties as required (light cleaning, event support, filing, etc.)

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Strong interest in Manitoba and Interlake history and heritage preservation

  • Excellent communication and customer-service skills; comfortable speaking with visitors of all ages

  • Candidate must undergo a criminal records and vulnerable sector check if hired.

  • Reliable, responsible, and able to work independently as well as part of a small team

  • Successful applicant must be willing to work on weekends

  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, social media platforms, and basic website updates)

  • Creative mindset and enjoyment of hands-on projects (displays, children’s programming, parade float design, etc.)

  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs and spend extended periods standing or walking

  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check (required upon offer)

  • Must meet Canada Summer Jobs eligibility criteria: Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person; aged 15–30; legally entitled to work in Canada

Assets

  • Personal or family history in the Winnipeg Beach area (e.g., summer resident, cottager, or local family ties)

  • History student, or museum curator as a future

  • Ability to reside in or near Winnipeg Beach for the duration of the summer
